BEF Mini Grant: Cooking at AMS

BEF Mini-Grant Inspires AMS Students to Cook

Last spring, AMS teacher Jennifer Plater applied for and received a mini-grant from the Berkley Education Foundation for a mini kitchen. The goal of the mini kitchen was to bring life skills into the classroom.

In her grant, she wrote, “Students would be able to move around the classroom putting and pulling together what they need to cook recipes supporting independent functional life skills. Students would be able to practice their reading, reading comprehension, and math skills with functional lessons in recipes. Plus, cooking is so much fun! It's a joy for students and helps strengthen peer to peer relationships of LINKs in the class.”

Students have been using the equipment for a few months and are enjoying their cooking lessons.

The Berkley Education Foundation is proud to fund innovative ideas through the mini-grant program. Each year the BEF funds $12,000 worth of mini-grants to support and enhance the learning experiences for students at all levels in all buildings.
